Default Running woes: black toe nails

Runners are most familiar with this problem.
What do you do to minimize this? (other than cutting your toenails really short)
Is there some sort of cushioning material that one can use in front of the toes inside the running shoes?
Appreciate your help.

I had those on my last run, i was wearing socks that are too thick and my toes are hitting the ends of my shoe.

I got this from http://www.thechildrenshospital.org/...limbs/toe.aspx

Subungual Hematoma (blood under toenail): This medical term is applied when a blood clot forms under the toenail. It is caused by a crush injury to the tip of the toe. Some are only mildly painful and blood is typically under less than 50% of nailbed. Others can be severely painful and throbbing, and these may need the pressure released to relieve pain. The pressure can be released by putting a small hole through the nail. With larger subungual hematomas, the toenail will usually fall off. A new nail will grow back in 6 to 12 weeks.

------------

i read in a first aid book that you can heat a needle or a bare paper clip. then let it burn through the toenail. it's painless and it releaves the pressure once the blood flows out. BTW, do this once you notice the blood is forming. once it's formed i don't think the technique will work.

HTH.

Arc,

I got my shoes from NB with their expertise in fitting included. Shoes seem alright, about 1/2 size bigger. I was thinking of putting a foam cushion within the toe portion.

It's not that serious though, I get a slight discoloration pa lang, but have read about extreme case of nails falling off. I've seen the Africans when I run in the Subic Marathon and they were really bleeding.

I've done a La Mesa trail run. Licao is doable, madulas lang inside Mahogany because of the moist leaves on the ground and dangerous because of the unseen ruts underneath. Sama ako. (oh toe nails beware, pag marami downhill portions)

I had the same issue which as caused by a a combination of factors which are running longer distances with cross trainers and longish toenails. It didn't occur again after using good fitting running shoes and cutting my nails short before a long run. A Foot spa date with my wife once in a while helps relieve my battered feet. Oooohhhh so soft.....

Di kaya mahigpit ang shoelaces nyo sa toe area?
I used to have blisters on both sides of my big toes from too tight shoelaces ( I run sockless ) sa toe area
Now |I tighten nalang sa gitna ng feet and not so tight yung laces sa toe area , gives my toes extra space pero still keeps the shoe stable

i found this lacing for running (daw)

http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/locklacing.htm

prevents slippage particularly during downhill.
