La Mesa Dam Trailrides

The barkada has been hitting the La Mesa Dam trails again in preparation for the Oct. 19 Ride for Pride race. La Mesa is fantastic place to trail, with lots and lots of yummy singletrack.

Coby and I have been chasing the geared guys around on our SS's. The La Mesa trails seem tailor-made for singlespeed action. It's been raining non-stop too, on our two last trail rides it rained non-stop from start to finish.

The La Mesa trails are composed of a soil that's a lot grittier than the loamy earth of Montalban - in the wet, the sandy mixture becomes a thick grinding compound. I've worn out two sets of V brake pads in two rides, and all the boys lost a lot of material from the pads of their hydros and mechs.

This last ride, Coby ground his Deore hydros down to nothing - literally "bakal sa bakal" and while torquing his way up a slope, also snapped his Sram chain in two. Now that's power for you! The break to repair the chain bought me some time to snap off some pics.

Here's Coby repairing his chain.
In the pic with Coby are fatcat (Steven), lockheed (Kurt) and Master Jun.
It's wet, we're cold, and we're having a great time!

Here's my Raleigh taking a break.
Sitting under a tree is eminent trailmaster Bud Chua of Padyakbud.com

See you guys at the race!

That was some ride in Signal No. 2 weather. It teaches a thing or three about technical mud handling.

At the start of the ride I was pratting on about how rain and mud does havoc to brakes and brake pads. By the second half of the ride, my brakes were already howling. Lo and behold, I had already ground my pad material to zero... and we were still deep in the singletrack near tower 3. I got home and took out my brake pads. the metal pad backing was paper thin. the springs were ground in half, and my rotors now look like they were re-machined. Hehe.

The moral of the story: Always carry spare brake pads boys and girls! Esp. on wet rides.

Ride with Pride: the La Mesa Dam Race!
Thanks to itan, MarkDC, mtbventures, fattire and islaw for the pics!

The Ride with Pride race organized by King Bernas/Bantay Kalikasan at the La Mesa Dam was a great, great event! Very well organized - with a fantastic course featuring rolling fire roads and swoopy singletrack - and well-attended by the local mtb personalities, the race was a complete success!

As always, the barkada was first in line to partake of the fun, with Coby picking up registration forms no. 1- 10 from All Terra for the boys to fill out. More forms were ultimately needed as more than fifteen of the bros signed up to have fun and race.

As for me, the race would mark a personal milestone - my first race on board a singlespeed

Bright and early in the morning of Nov. the 19th, 7am on the dot, we lined up at the registration table to pick up our race kits.

We were in good company as we waited in line, I'm sure you recognize these usual suspects...

And these guys look strangely familiar too...!

'Di pa naguumpisa, kilala na natin kung sinong mananalo!
Dandan ang "alamat ng Montalban" and Arjuna, former RP DH team coach and XC racing champion

Registration started promptly at the announced time, and was very well organized.

Getting our forms in order...

and filling out the required waivers...

to be notarized by the good attorney on site! Deed of sale po, paki palo na rin!

After picking up our race kits and signing our waivers, we decided to have breakfast!

Cold cuts, wheat bread, Japanese mayo, French mustard and fresh greens!
Whatta feast!

Washed down with fruit juice and Pokari - mamaya na yung beer!

Then, the race organizers fired up the program, and all off us racers and guests stood to attention for our national anthem, the prayer, and the oath of sportsmanship.

"....it is not about the result, but how we conduct ourselves..."
Sonny and our fellow racers reciting proudly the Oath of Sportsmanship

Then, the moment we were all waiting for - the start of the race proper!
The Race Marshall gave the signal, and down the track we went!

Here's Gilbert weaving his way through the trees on his Turner 5Spot....

followed by fatcat Steven on his Ells Moment...

and this is me torquing my way through the singletrack on my singlespeed!

Stand and deliver! Mashing my way towards the secret marshalls

As expected, Dandan ruled the course and took the podium!

The 199 Offroadhouse barkada did quite well, with Sonny taking 6th and Edison 7th in the oldies-but-goodies age group!

Sonny and Dean Harlan, who took 14th in the younger age cat! Well done!

And here's me crossing the line, a long while after the rest of my buddies!

I did it! I hoist my singlespeed into the air as Edison looks on!

After the race, the winners in the age cats take to the podium!
Congrats Ian and Juna, and the other winners as well!

While the secret marshalls have fun after a job well done!

Dandan is a well-liked and much respected champion and friend...

and soon it is his turn on the podium with the overall winners.

I get to climb up on the stage too...
winning a Deuter cap for being one of four singlespeed finishers!
Thanks to the organizers and sponsors!

And after all that, it's time to hang with the gang, and chow down some more!

Cold cuts, Country chicken, roast duck, wheat bread....

Washed down with ice-cold SMB...

and truffles for dessert!

Fatcat feeds our champ Sonny!

And the rest of us unwind and chat about the great race we had!

Thanks for viewing, happy trails everyone!

Rev AFP Nite Ride!

In preparation for the Subic 24 hour endurance event, the barkada busted out flashlights, blinkers, reflectors and assorted other light-giving gadgets and made ready to hit the trail as soon as the sun went down!

We set out at six in the evening in perfect conditions, nice and cool, cloudless sky with stars out and a sliver of moon. Three of us on singlespeeds - Coby, Sonny V, and myself, towed by three strong gearies - Edison, Banjo V, and Sir Milo.

First, we climbed the Wall pretty much in pitch darkness as we were saving our batteries for the long trail to come. At night, the Maarat Wall becomes quite a lover's lane, and we passed couple after couple cuddling quietly in the dark. We left them to their own devices, they had their thing to do, and so did we.

It was a cold and very clear night, with a fantastic view of Metro Manila's lights as Coby and I stood and mashed up the Wall - with Sonny long gone up ahead, spinning his 32 x 16 gearing like it was nothing. Sad news at the top though, the friendly Timberland guard who lets us in every morning had to do his duty and turn us away as we failed to get permission from his superiors for a night ride.

No worries, we took a slow ride down back to Aling Tina's then made our way up to our rest stop via Reverse AFP.

Here we are at the top of Rev AFP - I snap off a camphone pic with Goyo's Nite Rider light kit for illumination, with the lights of Manila as our background

Yahoo! Good friends, great ride! That's us with Aling Lilia who owns the store at the top of Rev AFP

Picnic time! The boys chow down on on Gatorade, sodas, crackers and chicharon!

Then, it was all lights on and a full sprint down AFP back to Divine Mercy and the long ride home!

Happy trails all!

That was a great ride! The most fun in the dark I've had without taking any clothes off. Weekly night ride?
I thought the wall and AFP reverse would somehow magically become easier climbs at night. They were, of course, just as hard. But the view at the top is 10x more spectacular than during the day.

On the downhills, Rimpy's Niterider Minewtx2 dual really shone. Worth the bucks.
