And then, there were 2!!!

Today, on our regular early morning Grotto - Monterey - PFA ride, BryO brought his Surly singlespeed! No ordinary SS ride, this is BryO's pimped out 1x1 with the Large Marge rims and the huuuuuge Kenda Flame tires!

Here it is hanging out with my Raleigh SS at the Chapel stop on PFA.

Whoa! Those be fat tires, my friend!!!

My Raleigh with his Surly buddy on steroids!

A view from the front - I'm running 2.3 Weirwolf freeride tires - they are nothing compared to Bry's huge meats!

Up at the top of PFA, we stopped for some softdrinks and suman.

The bikes of the bros - a whole bunch of Ellsworths with a couple of Speshs and Giants thrown in

BryO's Surly is hard to miss with its ginormous tires

My Raleigh just hanging out

After that, it was Halo-halo out to the main trail, and down the wall to Aling Tina's for lunch.

Then, the long road home for a well-deserved bike wash!

Happy trails everyone, thanks for viewing!

fatcat,

Don't worry, I still lab yu boss!

Ang lupit talaga ni Bryan - namangha ako nung rinemate niya yung mga huling ahon sa Rev AFP ng walang tigil

Uhaw na daw siya, gusto nang mag softdrinks sa taas

wild duck

Hay nako, what's the point of my training to keep up with my stronger buddies, when they decide to train even harder alongside me? Mali yata strategy ko.

Kuya Boy, Gilbert at Sonny naman, nakisama at di na nagkambyo sa mga AM rigs nila. Tinayuan nalang ang lahat na ahon. Binalik-balikan pa ako.

Reminds me of the special two-colored tennis ball designed to be more visible and hittable to you thus improving your game. Problem is, kita din nung kalaban.

Ahahay!

And then there were three...

Ive been riding geared exclusively for the past few months and was wondering when I'll find the enthusiasm (and strength) to go back to being SSingle. Then like a lightning bolt, I was surprised to find out that Rimpy/Darth Paul himself had gone to the dark SSide. To hell with preparation. Lets ride SS!

Mang Boy, Rimpy, Donnie and I set off for a punishing route: Aling Tina's - Mary Mediatrix Grotto in Monterey - AFP reverse - Timberland. Hell, I cramped up last saturday doing this same route on my geared turner! Good thing I gave my bike the Push tuneup.... that is... tinulak ko nalang pag di na kaya.

Master Sonny was supposed to join us, but Mang Boy wasnt able to pass for him. Nagtampo tuloy. Si Mang Boy...kinarma - nakalimutan ang cycling shoes so he had to ride with his crocs. Nevertheless, parang di parin pinawisan.

At the Mary mediatrix chapel atop monterey

My Voodoo Wanga and Rimpy's oldskool Raleigh. Steel steeds.

Finally atop AFP where we rested and refueled. Mang Boy was almost asleep, since he reached the top long before us.

Going down timberland, we were greeted by butterflies, which were uncannily abundant that morning. Yup, we singlespeeders are close to nature.

Till next time.

Hi Cob,

Gotta change the title of the thread to "OUR SS Adventure"!

Really had a blast on our last ride - lalo na when the butterflies started landing on me on the trail! Siguro I look like a plant or a large flower

BryO will join us daw on Saberday, but Donat will be out of town. Sonny's SS is built up na, and lets convert Kuya Boy's hardtail!

Yahoo!

PS - Iba talagang magmahalan sina Mang Boy at Sonny, may LQ pa - just had to post this message from Sonny to Kuya Boy when Kuya Boy failed to pick him up that morning.

Followed up with:

"Hayop! Hayop ka talaga, taksil! Di na ko maka sunod, naiiyak ako. Magingat kayo."

Ahahay! Ano ba 'yan?!!!!

And then, there were four!!!

Sonny V and Kuya Boy kissed and made up, and to my surprise Sonny showed up for today's ride with his own SS rig at the back of Kuya Boy's pickup.

With Montalban legend Sonny V. on the SS bandwagon, that makes four singlespeeders in the gang! CobyM, BryO, Sonny, and I!

To test the SS waters, Sonny converted his vintage Cannondale hardtail rigid bike, using a rear der as a temporary tensioner, and a full cogset in the absence of spacers, locking the drivetrain into 32 x 18 gearing.

Here are some pics of his rig from today's Maarat Wall - Giant barkada ride.

Sonny V and his rigid SS ride

Not quite the most elegant SS setup, but whatever works, right?

Form be damned, function sure didn't suffer as Sonny made mincemeat of the climbs. He was sprinting up the wall, and coming back down to check on me for good measure.

We stopped for drinks at Giant, then it was back down the trail to Aling Tina's for lunch. Successful ride too, as Sonny enjoyed his first SS experience, and is now committed to a full SS conversion of his Cannondale!

That's one more SS rider in the group, and I think there soon will be more!

Happy trails everyone!

Singlespeed at Licao-licao

Today I decided to bring my oldie but goodie Raleigh singlespeed to our weekly Saturday Licao group ride. As usual, we parked at Duyan, and by 7am we were on our way down Masukong.

Me and my ride at the start of the Masukong downhill.
We are hundreds of feet above the Nabutas fireroad, which we must climb on the way to the Licao terminal.
Riding today are Kuya Boy, Dean Harlan (youngrascal), CobyM, Steven (fatcat), Sonny V (kalabaw), Master Jun and Edison

The view from Masukong, with all of Rizal spread out below, and the gorge of Wawa in the distance.
Sorry for the poor pic, its a camphone!

Here I am standing and mashing up the Nabutas fireroad.
Thanks Coby, for taking my pic!

At the Licao terminal, at last!
With me are Master Jun, Kuya Boy, Dean Harlan, Coby, Sonny and Edison

We start our ride into the trails of Montalban and San Jose del Monte

A hastily-snapped pic of the group on the muddy singletrack trails of Montalban

Crossing a wooden bridge atop a rushing stream on the trail

After a good four hours of playing on the trails, we blasted our way out of the singletrack and returned to Duyan to celebrate Steve's bday!

Bday boy fatcat puts his Moment aside for a Pinoy Gatorade moment...

Joined by his tuba-drinking buddies, of course!

Steve captures the elusive Sonny V and forces glass after glass of tuba down his throat

The tuba is just an appetizer, the real stuff is yet to come!

Kuya Boy arrives with the gin, with Edison carrying the cooler.
The Generoso is a gift for the locals at Duyan.

Kuya Boy's cooler is loaded with everything we need... ice, fish for grilling, suka, and calamansi soda!

Mmmm! A baby yellowfin! Yummy after a long, hard, SS trail!

Steve, Coby, Kuya Boy and Sonny can't wait to get started... inuman na!

Dean Harlan, Master Jun and Kuya Boy... hey, Dean's a minor, and shouldn't be drinking.
What should he do?

Aha! Some teenage girls, daughters of our suki's at Duyan, are there hanging out!
That's their mom, on the right.

Problem solved! Girls, this is Dean... Dean, meet the girls....
Boys.... inuman na!!!

The Bday Boy does the bartending honors...

A little calamansi soda, a lot of gin, crushed ice....

Some juice and pulp from an actual pomelo...

A dash of salt on the rim... and voila!
That's one super-yummy gin pomelo! Saarrraaaap!!!!

The bartender drains his glass.... Yummy!

Kuya Boy signs his approval, by doing a bottoms-up as well!

While the gang starts warming up with some drinks, Rick gets lunch ready...

Here's Rick grilling some fish.... and pretty soon...

The rice is ready!!! Time to chow!

We spread some banana leaves on a couple of feed sacks, and the gang grabs coconut shells, leaves, spoons and washes hands in prep for the mini-fiesta!

Chowtime! Inihaw na pla-pla, bangus and tuna with toyo and sukang pinakurat!

The gang digs in, no talking muna!

Wow, naubos ang ulam! Pati kanin!

No worries, grilled fish keeps arriving, and the gang keeps eating!!!

Steve feeding Sonny...

And Sonny feeding Kuya Boy!!!
Naks naman, pero wala pa rin discount sa Moment frame, loko!

After a gut-busting lunch, the gang starts hitting the gin in earnest...

Salt on the rim, calamansi soda, gin, crushed ice...

With a dash of the super-yummy pomelo...

This one's for me!

Cheers, everyone!!!

That was one hell of a meal... este ride!
Happy birthday Steve!!!!

Here are some more pics.
This is a lot steeper than it looks.

This bridge was really slippery. Worse, a piece I was standing on broke and fell into the river. :P

I just love the view from the top of masukong downhill. I'll bring a real camera next time.

You're all worthy to be called MASTERS!

The preparation of food, the drinks after the rides shows your celebration of life!

Thanks for sharing!
