Default My Singlespeed Adventure

My Singlespeed Adventure

My Raleigh hardtail is the first mountainbike I've ever owned. I bought it way back in 1996, when I was taking my Masters Degree in Harvard. I used it to school and back, to the gym, to the grocery, basically everywhere I needed to go. And at the end of the day to unwind, we'd take long meandering trips along the banks of the beautiful Charles River.

When I got it at Cambridge Cycles along Mass Ave (as Massachussetts Ave is called), it was a nice bright blue, with stickers proudly proclaiming "Made in the USA" and "Oversize ChromeMoly Tubing". It was pretty spiffy for those times, with it's seven speed drivetrain, and its RockShox elastomer fork with the 1" steerer tube to fit its standard-sized headtube. It had cantilever brakes, and toe clips too! I felt like a John Tomac, the great Raleigh factory rider himself, as I wheeled around Harvard Yard.

I took it home with me after I graduated, and it took a great liking to the streets of Manila. I'd ride around our village for exercise, and to the Fort or UP on weekends to join the offroad barkada for a spin. I did a couple of Firefly rides with it, and bought it a Zoke Bomber fork with a 1" steerer. Then, when Sir Dan sent me an Epic all the way from Bacolod the full sus bug bit hard, and I began combing the trails for real, and the Raleigh was put aside.

I kinda missed the blue bike though, and I've always wanted to build a singlespeed. Last Sunday, with a little help from Boyet of Powerbikes, it all came together, and here's my bike as it left the shop.

My old blue Raleigh is now a singlespeed, with all its original parts, save for a new handlebar from the parts bin, pedals and tires.

34-21 gearing, just right to power the 2.3 WTB Weirwolfs up the trails.

Today was a blast, I took it for a spin around Maarat with the boys. Here are some pics of my singlespeed adventure.

As usual, we parked at Aling Tinas, then began our leisurely spin on our normal route, down to Marikina Valley, then up to the Grotto (the Chapel of Mama Mary Mediatrix of all Grace actually) located in the Monterey area.

Here I am at the Grotto of Mama Mary

The Grotto is a beautiful and serene place, dominated by a huge statue of Mama Mary atop the chapel, and another large statue of Mama Mary's face

The barkada - BryO, fatcat (Steven), me, Peter, Frank and Mike, with CobyM taking our pic

From the Grotto, we rode back down to Marikina, then climbed back up Monterey on our way to Rev AFP.

Here we are taking a breather at the shed above the Monterey climbs

Whew! Standing and mashing is hard work!

Finally, we reach the court at AFP Village, signaling the start of the climb to Rev AFP.

Coby's Voodoo, my Raleigh and BryO's Epi taking a breather

The others arrive and we begin the climb up Rev AFP.

The climb up Rev AFP was a bit of a heroic effort - the big Weirwolfs biting deep into the loose shale but providing great traction as I stood and mashed on the climbs.

Coby and I at the top.

Coby is the original singlespeeder in the barkada, and his jersey proudly shows where his heart is. Between him and me, I predict a new chapter in the biking story of our barkada - singlespeed!

Singlespeed just hanging out... for a well deserved rest.

From the Rev AFP rest stop, we made our way to the Tabletop, before plunging down into Manggahan.

Here I am at the Tabletop - big mountains, blue sky

The barkada, with the Sierra Madre mountains stretching to the horizon

Really digging the singlespeed vibe

OMG!

They said that SSpeeding is the pinnacle of a cyclist's quest for Halimawship.

Made use of our spare and neglected parts and frames. Sayang din naman.

Thanks for sharing.

From the Tabletop, the singletrack trail plunges down - down, down, down into a stream.
This is the Manggahan trail.

The view from the bottom, sweet singletrack pointing down

BryO all smiles on his uber trail weapon - his Ells Epi

That's me coming down next...

followed by Mike

And here I am at the stream at the lowest point of the trail.

From here, it's a singletrack climb out of the valley and back up to the main Maarat trail.

A look back at where we came from - whoa, that's steep!

And a look up at what we must climb - it's stand and mash, or dismount and push!

The long singletrack climb of Manggahan leads to a fork, left to what we offroaders call "Bowlingan" or right to a descent that takes you to the main Maarat trail.

We went right at the top, and rode the trail back towards Timberland and down the wall back to Aling Tinas.

The bikes parked at Aling Tinas as we chow down for lunch

All packed up to go home... tired but happy!

My Raleigh and I had a great singlespeed adventure!
Thanks for viewing and happy trails!

Thanks for all the kind comments, guys!

To Enzo - thanks for the comments, sir! Just following your advice, and keepin' on crankin'!

To kamote - glad you liked the post, I do believe we'll have more SS adventures to post - BryO and Kusinero ride SSs already, Coby just converted his Voodoo rig, and the rest of the guys are getting curious about the whole 1 gear thing

To hyperion - thanks for the welcome! Hope to run into you and your SS on the trails!

To g.b.b. - thanks for the Mary bar suggestion, bro - nanlilisik nga mga kalyo ko sa kamay kakahataw nung handlebar! Gotta get me one of those...

To xctrekker - sorry sir wala akong alam about cameras or backlighting, just using a phone cam sorry if the pics are a bit off!

Happy trails everyone!

Darth Paul,

I've heard so much about you and the rides you join and organize from riders hanging around QC bike shops. Always fun fun fun! Always great adventure.

Pero dapat Koyang na lang tawag mo sa akin, kasi ako ang tunay na Koyang sa edad ko, wag na Sir. Koyang na lang Koyang Rimpy

keep on crankin

ako na sasagot nyan sir ghorio... alam mo ba yung kanta ni james ingram na just once??? para ka lang nakikinig na ganun while riding SS pero ito pinipilit mong abutin yung highest note ng kanta.... so mahirap pero masarap pakinggan kung maabot mo yun highest note hehehe....

basta, kung puro uphill then more challenging kasi walang choice kungdi tatayuan mo lahat hanggang taas. tip..start with 32X20 gearing... if naka geared bike ka, try not to shift and same feeling lang sa SS.
