Default how do you entertain a newbie rider on trails?

I've joined several trail rides already and even organized a few newbie rides. This question just came out of my mind when a fellow biker message me and thanking me in advance for organizing these newbie rides. (even though we haven't met each other)

I for one wanted my fellow bikers to just enjoy the trail and have fun during our rides. I see to it the every one is safe and feel that they are really part of the group.

having newbie stamina, i rest with them and provide snippets of information and assurances. not too much data either so as not to overload but more on basic requirements of a ride such as hydration, necessary tools, some techniques, etc. besides being self contained, i try to point out regular meet up points of groups like aling tinas and chowking san mateo so he/she can find others to ride with at short notice when i'm not around. membership in pmtb and other e-groups help in this category too.

from some articles i've read, they recommend:

1. a shorter distance - a bonking newbie would feel shame and wouldn't likely return for the punishment;
2. let them go first to appreciate the lush scenery, not to eat your dust when you try showing off;
3. let them discover for themselves the nuances of the ride, not from the bombardment of too much info from you or the ride guides;
4. when possible, bring/carry extra supplies for them - spare tubes, water, snacks and tools.

i'll add to this when i remember something or come across the write-ups again. in the meantime, keep up the good work in biking 'em forward!

hmm...lemme see...i never really got any newbie in cycling. but in mountain climbing, yes. and pretty much the same rules apply. this is on the assumption that you brought the newbie and not just met them while riding.

1) make a good plan on when and where to start, stop and regroup.
2) keep the distance short, if you have padyak all the way, they might suffer.
3) make sure sustenance or medical aid is ready.
4) make sure tools, spares are ready (since newbies typically aren't equipped or even know how to use the tools.
5) encourage them, it really helps at the point of giving up.
6) if necessary, appoint a lead, pacer and sweeper.
7) oh and try to keep the riding group small, unless you have a good support group.

to all newbies like me, now is the appropriate time for us to be heard.

in addition to meet up with friendly people (and to hook up with hot and gorgeous girls for some of us if not all), we wish to be treated with patience and kindness.

to welcome us with a smile and a handshake is enough a friendly gesture and assurance that we keep an eye out for one another and we make an extra effort to encourage one another because we are all involved in the same journey-ride.

simple lang ... align on expecations.

but its also good to push them beyond their limit sometimes. minsan kaya naman, just need that extra nudge. i feel the only way you get stronger is the ride with the stronger riders.

How to entertain a newbie?

Try to look for Mang Bay (Licao Trailmaster and veteran cyclist). Sigurado mageenjoy ang newbies sa walang katapusang kwento nya sa trail. Better ask Ely Santos's Ekstrim group at yung mga nakasama na nya sa Licao.

Or kung sa personal point of view naman, sasayawan ko sila para mag enjoy sila. Pole Dancing would be great. Pero pag ginawa ko yung baka di na tayo makapagbike.

1.Just let them feel na protected and secured sila during the ride, wag iiwan at wag din pauunahin sa trail.
2.Give them advise every now and then and sabihin ang bawat scientific name ng mga puno o hayop na inyong makakasalubong.
3.Encourage them pag may techy part sa trail, kunwari may nakaharang na elepante sa singletrack at kailangan mag roll sa ibabaw nya, cheer him (mas maganda kung her).

Sana nakadagdag ako sa kalituhan.

I just most likely adjust to their pace then on the long uphill climbs I usually chat them up and if they feel the need to stop, I stop and rest with them and enjoy the scenery and the peaceful surroundings.

being a newbie myself, i appreciate it when our bikemates exert effort to do any of the following:

- explain in detail what really "lies ahead"; minsan kasi yung "malapit na", "konting padyak na lang", at "medyo makunat" statements are misleading.. hehehe..

- ride our pace just to ask how we are doing; i have always experienced this and it gives me the assurance that someone is watching me from start to finish..

- give pointers on how to ride specific areas of the route (never assuming that we already know, kasi minsan mahiyain kami magtanong, hihihi..ayun, semplang tuloy..);

- lastly, share your snacks .. being newbies, we have a vague idea of how long or short a ride is.. e dahil mabagal kami, yung maikling ride, humahaba, ahihihi.. sorry naman.. kaya minsan, kulang sa tubig at snacks.. although i haven't experienced this problem, i have observed it pa lang..

Although i also understand the difficulties of organizers.. almost all declare themselves as "newbies", nakakalito tuloy.. PEACE!
