Default what's your workout or training schedule like?

To the pmtb triathletes, what's your regular workout or training schedule like?

Do you do all 3 sports on a regular basis?
How often and how long do you run, swim or bike?
And how do you incorporate mountain biking into your weekly routine?

Just wondering what it takes to become one.....

Swim - at least once a week, minimum of 1.5K
Run - at least twice a week, 5-10K midweek and 12 - 20K on weekends.
Bike - at least twice a week, 30K on trainer, 50-60K on road.

MTB ko minsan minsan na lang pag may long weekend.

A friend of mine na kararating from Ironman aus.( his 2nd for the year ) nagyaya last weekend
Bike from uplb to san juan, batangas then run a 20k daw, then do an olympic tri before riding back to uplb the next day
Nah , I'm beginning to like being fat

Thanks for the info Bluesman68, Doboltap. Among the 3 events, which one requires the most training?

+100.

In a country where swimming is not a traditional sport, even if we are surrounded by water, swimming is the least sport we are mostly not trained on. I also hate choking and drowning in water. And its the part of triathlon where shoving, nudging, kicking, punching, pulling and going over someone is allowed.

Yikes! I didn't know that triathlon was a contact sport and that trying to drown the competition (or stay alive) was part of the race. So do you need to train in the ocean from time to time?

Ms cathya,
Laki naman ng satisfaction mo sa sarili when when learn how to swim wspecially when swimming feels just as easy as walking
Di rin ako marunong dati lumangoy , and for awhile I thought di ako matuto kasi I'm a big guy
Then it all suddenly falls into place , a 1k then a 2k suddenly feels easier
Then mamya mayabang ka na, pakiramdam mo sayang bayad sa ferry when you can just swim to any island in sight hehe

Now that's impressive! All the while I thought your earlier post (3k swim followed by 1hr run) was a typo error.

So how did you guys eventually learn to swim so efficiently? Did you have to take formal lessons? I'm not exactly starting from scratch. I know how to float and propel myself forward but I get tired easily even when swimming very slowly. I must be doing something wrong.

In long-distance swimming do you do freestyle all the way or do you alternate it with other strokes to rest. I find it hard to sustain the crawl for very long periods. Even if I swim less than 45 mins, in between freestyle laps, I have to do breast stroke.

In my case , I learned from a book Total Immersion, Terry Laughlin
Not the fastest way to learn
I'll say , take the formal lessons
Kaya ka kasi napapagod , probably mali yung technique
Yup , I do a 3k pero very slow
Pag total immersion kasi hindi nakapagod pagmabagal lang langoy
Nga lang LSD swims are extremely boring unless sa dagat ka lalangoy

@cathya: I took formal lessons as the swimming technique I knew before I just learned from being thrown sa ilog. YUng tipong after 10-15 meters mamatay-matay na ako sa pagod. :P

That was almost a year ago. Now I can swim continuously for more than 2K but still has to learn a lot. I still panic sometimes at the thought of drowning in deep waters and cannot really say I have no fear of the water. Treading efficiently is a puzzle to me. The lack of public pools open after office hours is a problem for me, kaya I only swim once a week minsan, during weekends.

During Camsur 70.3, the buoy line became my best friend...hehehe

Doboltap, the book you recommended must be good. Out of stock na daw sa Powerbooks and Fully-booked. Sana may mahanap pa ako because I'm more comfortable learning new skills DIY too.

Deo, I wish I could learn to swim correctly as fast as you did but I expect it will take me much longer. In college, I took swimming PE twice but up to now I'm still stuck in first gear. Maybe I have to unlearn a lot of bad swimming habits before I can swim the right way. Although I'm not afraid of drowning, my bigger problem will be staying on track - i have a hard time swimming in a straight line especially if I cant see the bottom . Baliktad tayo re pool schedules. Most pools here are full on weekends so I usually swim on a weekday in a hotel pool near my office. From there I go directly to work. The only problem with this schedule is that the water is cold in the morning and it takes a lot of willpower just to get in the pool.

But I guess triathletes are all about willpower. Bilib ako sa disiplina nyo.

Total immersion has a website, tapos may pinoy instructors sila
The only reason I used the book was because i'm here in the province
Highly recommend ko sya especially of you have bad habits
Sanay kasi ako lumangoy ng may tsinelas sa elbows, natanggal ko yun
Strangely enough , I dont like swimming that much pero sa swim at bike ako nakaka bawi
OTOH, I love running , it's my fave of all 3 sports yet I totally suck at it

btw, 1 year nako nag stop mag tri's
Removed doing a full Ironman from my bucket list
It's not happening haha

Hmmm.....swimming with tsinelas sa elbows...

I live in the province too so I think I'll have to order the TI book or DVD from the site. There were a lot of different books in the online store. Which one would you recommend? They also have an ebook of Outside the Box. Enough na kaya yon?

My fave of the 3 sports is biking but it's been 7 yrs since I last used a road bike. I gave away my road bike when I bought my first hardtail and nowadays, I only use a FS on and off-road. Been planning to buy a road bike for he past 2 yrs but up to now, its still at the bottom of my priority list. Oh well, maybe this summer... I know that the mtb geometry (as well as the rider's position on the bike) is very different from that of a tri bike. Will road training on an MTB have any benefit if I want to try a tri someday or will I just be training the wrong muscles?

Lastly, don't you think it's too early for you to be editing your bucket list? Ako nga, my only ambition is to do a sprint tri and a full Ironman is more of a pipe dream rather than a realistic goal. But wasn't the oldest ironman already in his 80s when he crossed the finish line? I think the more goals we cram in our list, the more we have to live for and the effort of trying to achieve them will keep us from kicking the bucket before we're ready.

And if you're in a temporary slump, I'd recommend this book - What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami. My daughter gave it to me last Mother's day and it got me out of mine.

Kung pang triathlon , I think they have a book on triathlon specific swimming , if I'm mistaken siguro the freestyle swimming book
If you do try DIY ang swimming , mas maganda you have a training partner to see kung tama or mali ang ginagawa mo

One of the reasons I got out of triathlon was my knees are beat up from running w/ poor technique ( I'm flat footed )
Then I tore an mcl doing ..... stupid things hehe
So anything that involves running long distances , inalis ko na sa 100 things to do before I croak list ko . Not that I'm dying anytime soon .At least I hope not
But I do miss the tri training and the open water races
I'm not in a slump naman , but I love books . i'll take a look at the murakami book

re: tsinelas in the elbows technique
Watch ITU races on youtube , in between the swim, bike and run legs , may transition where the athletes change equipment from one event to another
It's the same w/ us kids pagnaghahabulan sa ilog ( long time ago ). Mas mabilis ang transition from the swim to the run when your tsinelas is attached to your arm heehee

@Doboltap;

Pareho pala tayo. I also had a knee operation (for doing stupid things on a bike) several years ago and my MRI back then already showed beginning osteoarthritis. I'm also flat-footed and my ortho said it was probably due to overuse either from running when I was in high school or hiking with a heavy load when I worked in Cordi for 3 years. Yan din ang dahilan kung bakit sprint tri lang ang ambition ko. But who knows? Although I'm admittedly already going over the hill, maybe I'll live long enough for someone to invent a bionic knee.

Tsinelas sa elbows technique...cute!

@aris; yup plano ko din mag lessons kapag medyo uminit na ang panahon. I don't think I can swin the right way unless someone can see what I'm doing wrong

if I'd studied how to trainsa tris properly when i started , I wouldnt have injured myself
Madami online resources for starting in tris
At first , i thought you just trained hard till you passed out
w/ a program , you can train less w/ better results
