Default what did you repair/maintain/service today/yesterday

You have to be the one who did it
And you can't post here if you're a bikeshop mechanic already

Share what tools you used, how long you did it, and any other notable experience

Share away!

Let me start

This past weekend, I tried servicing my pedals for the first time. I got a pair of really old worn out odyssey pedals (freebie sa isang sale). But they were GLOW IN THE DARK so I wanted to use them.

Tools used
1) 15mm pedal wrench
2) sharp pointy thing to pry out the plastic cap
3) A socket wrench to remove retaining nut
4) A screw driver to fish out a washer
5) Rags, soapy water, alcohol to clean the parts
6) Grease

Took me several hours to service a pair because I was doing this for the first time, and because I was using this website as reference

Last month..

More than 2 hours ko ginawa...

nice thread

I adjusted my FD, it was rubbing on the chain when I am on the biggest ring, tried adjusting the cable, H and L screws, but in the end realized that my FD was mounted too high.

Pwede ba kaya kung hindi today/yesterday?

Well, if permitted..

A couple of days ago, I took off, cleaned, reinstalled and adjusted the Avid BB7 brakes on my dad's bike. His levers were too far from the bars to reach, the throw was too deep (too much lever travel in order to actuate the calipers), and the pad clearance was no longer equal. So I had to adjust everything. But it was very easy with this brakeset. Again, it surprises me how the BB7 can have an almost-hydro feel to it in terms of power, modulation and "softness" on the levers.

Moreover, about a week ago, I had to install a new Epicon fork (again, on my dad's bike). Had to fit the headset crown race. I didn't have a 1" pipe to push it in place. So I had to get creative and resourceful. Turned out that even living room furniture can be used. hehe. I dont have a hacksaw so I had to have the steerer cut at the LBS.

Kagabi lang din nagservice ako ng bb7 brakes! Sarap ng bakasyon.. sarap ng bb7!

All I did was regrease the cables and readjusted the pads. Hydaulic feel indeed.

Honga, sobrang sulit talaga ng BB7! If I were to have a mech brake setup, I'll definitely be on BB7s, no other! It's very easy to customize brake feel and bite point/engagement. Panalo sa DIY servicing ang BB7!:)

Kapag ba teflon-coated yung cables, kailanan pa ng regrease? Baka kasi kainin ng lube yung teflon coating eh.

Nilinis ko lang ung cables. Wala namang sumasabit at smooth naman yung galaw nung cable sa housing, so I thought that the teflon coating was doing its job. The lube that I have is dry lube (naubusan na ako ng wet lube). Kasi yung dry lube, amoy solvent eh. So okay lang bang langisan yung teflon-coated na cables?

Laugh Re: what did you repair/maintain/service today/yesterday

Just finished replacing all the cables and cable housings of an old school Diamond Back Ascent Avenir. Done tuning the shifters too.

Adjusted valve tappets and removed powersteering hoses.

Sa kotse ko. hehe.

Hello Pjax,

Default Re: what did you repair/maintain/service today/yesterday

Late post na ito kasi the day before yesterday ko pa ginawa..

So what did I repair/maintain/service?

My whole bike. Assembled it all by myself. (Rebuild)
1. Taped portions of the frame. Installed upper and lower links of my Ibis Mojo. Snapped on the QR seat binder and inserted my old Thomson seatpost.
2. Installed the Shimano XT BB (outboard bearing).
3. Installed the Cane Creek 110 IS headset with the 15QR Fox Talas RLC, Ibis 80mm stem and Easton MonkeyLite XC handle bars.
4. Installed my old Kenda Nevegal tires on new Shimano XT WH-M778 wheelset. (Intended to go tubeless, but in the meantime, I'll be using tubes while waiting for a pair of Schwalbe tires).
5. Installed the Shimano XT cassette. Then the rotors.
6. Skewered the wheels on.
7. Installed the Shimano XT crankset.
8. Slapped on the old Shimano XT shifters, brake levers, derailleurs and brake calipers (which earlier, I replaced the old brake pads with new Jagwire pads).
9. Slipped on my old Oury grips and locked them in place.
10. Inserted new Jagwire RipCord teflon-coated gear cables.
11. Threaded new Shimano cable housing through the frame's cable stops (which earlier I drilled with a rotary tool to convert to full-length cable housing)
12. Installed a new Connex Wipperman SX9 chain
13. Tuned the front transmission. Cut the cable and crimped a cable end cap.
14. Tuned the rear transmission. Cut the cable and crimped a cable end cap.
15. Zip-tied the cables and brake line.
16. Final adjustments. Weighed the whole bike. (Came in at 28.05 / 28.06 pounds).

The whole process took me 6 hours to finish. I guess not bad for a first-time bike builder. Tools/materials that I used are the following:
BB tool, set of hex keys (Stanley allen wrenches), hex key multi-tool, wire cutter, pliers, screwdrivers (flathead & crosshead), rubber mallet, lockring tool, adjustable open-end wrench, small brush, Xacto knife, scissors, velcro compression strap, fine grease (white), thread locker (similar to LockTite), Mr. Muscle degreaser (kitchen cleaner), isopropyl alcohol, rags, 3M tape.

That's all. Will post pics soon.:)

3. Scrubbed the tires with a tire brush.
4. Dried everything with a chamois.
5. Cleaned the Discs and stanchions with isopropyl alcohol.
6. Applied lube to the chain/RD/FD/Stanchions/hubs
7. Adjusted the FD/RD
8. Tightened bolts (stem, dropout, brakes, seatpost)
9. Checked tire pressure
10. Checked shock pressure.
