i'm entering the last phase of building my trail bike which i have started last may 2014 when i first purchased the frame and fork.

the last phase includes replacement of temporary parts/components with the final one.

so last night - this is what i have accomplished:
1) replaced the more of a roadie fizik arione kium saddle with the mtb fizik gobi kium xm saddle.
2) replaced black thomson stem face plate with red thomson stem dress-up kit face plate.
3) replaced the used chris king red headset top cap with new thomson red headset top cap.

within the next 2 weeks my trail bike build will be finished with the following finishing touches:
1) replace silver ybn 10 speed chain with kmc x10 sl gold chain
2) replace red single chainring bolt with gold.

My TCX's rear shifter cable frayed on me last night, jamming my STI lever, effectively halving my 10-speed cassette, and leaving me with only the large cogs accessible. (It could have been worse; at least I wasn't left with only the smallest cogs.) This is one of the maintenance jobs I don't have the proper tools or skills for, as the TCX uses internal cable routing.

Went to LifeCycle to have Mang Boy work his magic.

Not only did he replace the rear shift cable, he also cleaned out my sweat salt-encrusted headset and gave it a fresh coat of grease.

He also changed my bike fit a little by raising the STI lever brake hoods and raising the angle of the handlebars a touch higher. Effectively this will shorten the reach a little.

My first time to replace a chain all by myself, on my CX bike...replaced KMC X10 with Shimano Dura-Ace CN-7901.

Also attempted to repair my cracked front fender with superglue. Will see how well it holds...if not I might just have to replace it.

Had my first proper encounter with chainsuck. Yes, it can happen on a road/CX bike - especially if you're using a new chain on used chainrings. Gave the bike a wash, then tightened the FD mount adapter and retuned the FD.

This morning I had my first bent RD hanger. Chain wouldn't sit in one cog and it kept dancing all over the cassette. I broke out my spare RD hanger and swapped it on. Learned today that an RD hanger swap also requires a full RD tuneup job from scratch, since there will be slight changes in how the RD sits in relation to the cassette with the new hanger installed.

Time to order a couple spare RD hangers online. They're a little pricey at $25 apiece but invaluable for situations like this.

Cleaned and repacked Shimano front hubs.

Tools and materials used:
- Cone spanners/wrenches
- Adjustable wrench
- Flat screwdriver (for picking up and setting the ball bearings)
- Grease
- Flashlight (to search for a missing ball bearing, found hiding inside the axle)
- Rags

Took around 2 hours to complete, including 15 minutes searching for that missing ball bearing, and occassional time outs to watch the evening news.

Chainsuck happened again. Looks like my chain is a few links too long. The extra length is too much for my RD's cage to tension properly when shifting between chainrings in the smaller cogs.

I ended up removing two more links. Chain now looks like it's a similar length to the KMC X10 unit I replaced. I'm hoping this stops all incidence of chain suck.

Last night, a friend just brought in abroad a new bike, asked me to help him re-assemble it.

Installed the handle bars, front wheel, inflate the tires, screwed in the pedals and made cockpit adjustment to his liking.

And we had a short bike ride 6am this morning.
