Default Shimano XT wheelset. Insights please!:)

I'll be changing my 2-year old Mavic Crossrides. I'm considering getting a Shimano XT wheelset because of the attractive low price with relatively "stealth" looks (anti-bling) and lower weight. The rims are tubeless, the spokes are straight-pull and the wheelset will match my all-XT groupset and brakeset. Looks pretty good to me.

Any thoughts on durability, serviceability, reliability of XT wheelsets?

I'll also be switching to 15QR so I've got my eye on the WH-778 with 15QR front hub. I'm assuming that the rear hub is the same as the WH-775.

I might get a Shimano XT WH-M778 over the weekend. This is not an impulsive buying episode, as I have checked the reviews online. It's just that my budget for a wheelset is reduced and may be short to build a custom wheelset (Hope hubs, ZTR rims, Revo spokes). So I'm considering the Shimano XT wheelset. But I would like to get valuable insights before I pull the trigger.

Some of my concerns are:
1. Bearings. Not the sealed cartridge type. Are they any good?
2. Rims. Being tubeless is a plus factor, but are quite narrow at 19mm internal width. Are they tough enough for general trail riding?
3. Spokes. Straight-pull is my preference, but it may be difficult to find spares/replacements.
4. Freehub. I have no idea if the freehub is durable/reliable. Any insights?
5. 15QR. Not convertible to 20mm TA or 9mm QR.

But because of the attractive low price of below 20k, I guess the Shimano XT wheelset will be a good upgrade over my 2 year old Mavic Crossrides. The 300 grams weight savings is definitely a bonus.
If you have experience on this wheelset (or on the WH-M775), please share your insights. Thank you very much!:)

I've been using mine for 6 months and I'm happy with it. Looks good and performs well:) Bearings are easy to repair you can buy them at any bearing center (100pcs for P50) or you can change them with any ceramic 3/16 balls.

If you want the thru axle version you can check it out at http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...Wheels+09.aspx

Hope this helps:)

AFAIK, it's easier to service/replace cone and cup bearings compared to sealed.
which kinda makes me pray hard because i'm using sealed bearing hubs.

back to topic...i have no idea, he he he. i'm pretty sure it's durable and serviceable

I read somewhere in here that the pawls easily break. I wonder why I can't find that thread anymore.

hindi ba mas madaling magservice ng cartridge bearings kasi palit ka lang ng palit?

(sorry for the hijack. no experience with xt hubs/freehubs as well)

@Pjax,
No prob, sa hijack.:) Discussion naman ito eh, so hindi exclusive sa thread starter ang pagtatanong.

Anyway, my point exactly, parang mas ok kung buo nalang pinapalitan yung bearings (ala-Hope).

@All,
Thanks for the replies so far.

Default Shimano XT Wheelset

Cool Re: Shimano XT Wheelset

im also planning of using this type of wheelset coz of its attractive low price (factual).....tubeless ready, spokes design is a plus factor.....tho hard finding spares/replacement for a moment, but bearing serviceability seems much easier and low cost.....just my 2 cents

Sir,

M775 user here. XT wheelsets are tubeless compatible. WH M775 and WH M778 (15QR) are designed for XC use while WH M776 is for AM. WH M776 is the heaviest among the three given its intended purpose.

WH M775 - 1,677 g (w/out QR, valve stem)
WH M778 - 1,702 g (w/out QR, valve stem)
WH M776 - 2,043 g (w/out QR, valve stem)

I've been using WH-M775 for more than a year now. So far I haven't encountered any problem with this wheel set, even though I use them on downhill trails

if you do some research (meaning i-Google mo or i-Bing), the WH-778 wheelset did have issues with the freehub. some had theirs destroyed after several months of use.

i personally don't know why they get destroyed (don't know if they maintained it or not, whether they used abused it or not, or the freehubs/pawls were just really fragile). but it seems that other than the freehub issue, it's a pretty sturdy wheelset.

was also planning to get one, considering the light weight and that they come in 15qr front wheelset, and tubeless compatibility. I'm not sure of the rim width tho, as it will limit your tire choices. but basically, i wouldn't be going over 2.35in tires on these wheels myself, due to the 19mm width.

Totally forgot about this thread!

Well, it's been more than a year now since I got my XT wheelset. And I can say that it has exceeded my expectations. Bearings still spin smoothly. The hoops still true for more than a year of usage, although I have yet to "abuse" them on on proper AM riding. But they've been tested numerous times in Mt.Arayat, Pestaño, Maarat, Licao, La mesa, Bulacan and even raced 24 hours in Nuvali. I'm yet to maximize the rims' tubeless feature but I'm satisfied how they support 2.35 meaties and still remain light enough for low rotational weight and quick acceleration. I guess the next thing to do is find some tires that could run some Stans sealand in them and try riding tubeless for the first time.

Oh btw, my wheelset's actual weight is 1,720 grams (sans skewer, 15mm axle, tubeless valve, rotors and tires of course ;p ).
