err...ang sabi is crisper shifting. although a finely tuned rd will work as well as any other.

btw, i'm not sure kung upgrade nga ba ang tawag kung non series to acera or alivio. may mga non series kasi na 9 speed ready. while acera and alivio are 8 speed. some non series components are also using trickled down technology from Deore which is normally trickled down from LX coming from XT coming from XTR.

from non-series to acera or alivio? Probably not a lot of difference. Stick with your RD and just fine tune it, change the cables, etc. Should work fine. Take ko on this upgrade thing

+10 sa sinabi ni sir Anthrax, and if ever na mag-upgrade ka din lang to acera or alivio (8speeds) eh mag deore ( 9 speed) ka nalang which is the basic of shimano drivetrain series, the only problem is that you should also change your cogs(sprocket) into 9 speed din...

the difference??? may extra gear ka pa which later magagamit mo sa akyatan...

let's take alivio and deore for example. the difference is alivio uses plastic knuckle while deore metal so it's more durable when you smash it into something

performance-wise they're the same.

the other problem is you have to change shifters

btw 8spd (11-32) and 9spd (11-32) have the same range, no benefit for 9spd during climbs

yun ang totoong upgrade..buying an Alivio to to upgrade your nonseries with no idea kung ano differences (physical and functional) is not wise.

best to buy the 9spd Deore RD na 2008-2009 model which can be used for 8spd setups with a plus for spec'd potential upgrade to 9spd later on.

note: It may be confusing to most, but 8spd RDs can also be used for 9spd shifters and cogs <--I had to mention that sorry
another note: better to buy mid cage RDs

I've been using a non series shimano Rd and so far no problem for almost a year. It's true there's no big diff bet Acera/Alivio to a non series.

I think Non series to Acera or Alivio is not an upgrade coz Non series is more advance than the two and more expensive, or maybe you're referring to something else, maybe Tourney or whatever?

Besides the point, shimano has almost the same feel on rd's the only difference is the materials used on the model as the other posters stated here. Of course the weight too. Yes fine tuning is important, even you use XT or XTR if not in tune it will not perform well.

A little different if you will use Sram models with 1:1 actuation ( isang clik isang igkas ) much fast shifting. Stick to your Non-Series, fine tune it, and if di ka makapigl sa upgrade go on much higher model if you have the money to burn heheheh

Shimano series - from lx to xt, lighter shifting. Xt to xtr, crisp, reliable shifting. More precise too. Shimano xtr to SRAM XO - faster, precise, trouble free shifting. Needs very little re-alignment. They say SRAM x9 is almost the same as XO minus the bling. =)

Nice Sir.kasi you can still maxiize your RD by changing cables, putting grease on the cables and having it fine tuned.

Sa akin kasi an upgrade is buying a moer expensive, albeit,a better performance.Say an SLX,xt,XTR or an XO.Pero parang bitin nga kung RD langmdapat pati trigger shifters din para feel na feel ang pagk-upgrade
