help mga sir.. newbie.
we bought a built bike before (like 4 or 5 years ago) for around 7k. i forgot the components (generics lang siguro) maybe except for the frame 'coz it has a SPECIALIZED decal (im not sure lang if its orig or not). so my dad wants to build a bike with our old frame. village biking lang mga sir. pang exercise lang niya. he doesn't want to spend a lot of money but he also doesn't want to buy unbranded components. what are the stuff we need and would you recommend? budget bike mga sir. maybe the cheapest shimano groupset? cheapest suntour fork? cheap but reliable wheelset? ano pa? sorry if medyo magulo. noob talaga. thank you PMTB!

Since all you have is a frame, and not even sure if its real (though I doubt given the price of 7k for a whole bike), it might be better to just get a built bike either new or used. The buy and sell section had a few Jamis Trail X-1 for arond 8k.

I agree with sir rattrapante. I recently restored my 10yr old FS (full steel & full-sus) bike. After having the frame repainted and inspecting the old parts (which were all due for replacement); I ended up buying all the components except for the frame. I bought the ff. items:
Shimano Acera group set - P5.5k Suntour XCR fork w/LO - P2.7k 2nd hand wheelset - P2k (Mavic X221 rims, n/s Shimano disc ready hubs, Ritchey WCS and Kenda Nevegal tires) 2nd hand Amoeba borla cockpit - P1k 2nd hand WTB Power V saddle - P100 I spent almost P12k for the restoration (no disc brakes yet). If there is any consolation about this project, I had a good reason from my wife to spend on my bike. Cons are the frame is heavy as hell (old design) and some parts are hard to find (like the rear shocks, 28.6mm seatpost and 1 1/8" headset). Now I'm thinking of changing to a lighter HT frame (another expense, I might end up sub P20k). There are good deals in the trading section, either you go for a branded built bike or get the parts piece meal. Good luck and happy hunting!

first, check the headtube. if it's 1", medyo mahirap maghanap ng components. if it's 1 1/8", mas marami kang options. i'll throw some questions for you before i answer your queries
1) does your dad want or need a suspension fork? malaki na agad savings mo dito, daming available na rigid forks around. 2) do you have a bike shop near you with a trustworthy mechanic? now for you queries Q: what are the stuff we need and would you recommend? A: err...first we need to see the condition of the bike. kung binili tapos 'di nagamit for a long time or nagamit naman, pero some parts just need replacement. Q: maybe the cheapest shimano groupset? A: kahit comfort groupset like C201 or C101 pwede. i don't think he'll do aggressive riding. Q: cheapest suntour fork? A: err...see my first question Q: cheap but reliable wheelset? A: IMO, a good wheel build is better than any wheelset. in my case, i just get generic rims, spokes and nipples. use the hub that came with the groupset have the mech do the build. Q: ano pa? A: see my first answer

around the village pang exercise . . . ?
forget the gears. single speed na lang. laking mura agad nyan. unless may sobrang tindi na ahon, you won't need this. forget the fork, who needs suspension when you're not going to hit the dirt? savins sa cash and weight brakes - v-brakes lang ok na, again why go disc when you're not going to even hit the dirt spend a bit on the saddle and grips para comfy some people want to get the suspension, gears, etc to get a sense na mas ok yung bike (ok bike ko may kambyo, may suspension) but reality is at that price point it's cost, weight, will far outweight the benefits it will supposedly give. i suggest go with zen like simplicity on the bike, make it pretty, make it rideable. that or as mentiod above, the Jamis X-Trail sounds like a good deal. That or those Japanese commuter bikes.

At first, yan din ang gusto kong target. "Pang commute lang na bike"
Eh nakita ko tong PMTB. ayun, instead sa luma kong frame, napabili ng vision pursuit. instead na rigid fork, napagastos ng Suntour XCR. hehe If you want to stick to your plan, take note of all the prices given above. then go around your LBS and compare the prices. tama rin na you can go about not having a front suspension, rigid fork is like 60% cheaper. and pwede na ring SS lang. Ewan ko lang kung tama opinion ko ha, kasi naiinis talga ako sa v-brakes and hubs. generic hubs kasi kaya lagi kong inaayos. maybe you can focus more on this part.
